Thank you for your interest in volunteering at Tahoe SAFE Alliance. Volunteers are the backbone of our agency and play an important role in our mission. There are so many different opportunities to help at Tahoe SAFE Alliance. You are sure to find something rewarding. Bilingual volunteers are always needed. Crisis Intervention Training (CIT), required for certain programs, is offered twice per year. Training is every Tuesday and Thursday 6-9:00 PM for two months. There are 3 Saturday classes from 9:00 AM – 4:00 PM.
We are recruiting community members for the Spring 2016 Crisis Intervention Training! For more information, please download the syllabus and schedule. Email email@example.com or call (775) 298-0182 if you have any questions not answered in the Frequently Asked Questions.
Volunteer & Training Opportunities
The following opportunities require CIT training:
24-HOUR COMMUNITY HELPLINE: Answer the phone to provide important information to clients when they need it most. You will provide peer counseling and explore resources to an individual in crisis. Plan to work two 12 -hour shifts per month. You can work from the comfort of your own home! Also, you can staff the Helpline in Kings Beach office 3:15-5:15 PM on the first or second Thursday of the month during staff meetings.
CHILDREN’S PROGRAM: Help children recover from the effects of abuse. Young clients may have been affected directly by abuse and assault or may have been affected indirectly by intimate partner violence toward someone else in their home. Because survivors sometimes feel ashamed of their bodies or suffer from poor body image, the program focuses on positive physical activities and creative expression. Each group meets once per week for 8-10 weeks for gardening, yoga, art, pet therapy and pattern changing utilizing the outdoors for self-improvement.
SAFEHOUSE: Provide Safehouse residents with assistance, support, and peer interaction. You will educate residents on a wide range of life skills, helping them cook healthy food, study for school, and facilitate art therapy, form budget plans, or practice using computers. Bilingual volunteers are encouraged. We are always looking for individuals who are “handy” and “good with tools” to help with minor repairs!
PREVENTION: Join the Prevention Team in educating your community, targeting teens and children in the educational system and adults in the workplace. You may assist with classroom presentations or weekly support groups. You will be trained to present violence education on sexual assault, domestic violence, sexual harassment, self-defense, parenting skills, healthy relationships, and non-violence strategies.
EMPOWERMENT GROUPS: Join an agency advocate as a co-facilitator in one of our weekly empowerment groups with survivors of intimate partner violence and/or sexual assault. These groups often utilize Windows Between Worlds, a therapeutic form of art. Bilingual volunteers are encouraged.
LEGAL ADVOCACY: Assist our legal advocate with helping clients with legal action related to intimate partner violence, sexual assault, and abuse.
The following volunteer opportunities provide on-the-job training (CIT not required):
OUTREACH: Help us get the word out in our community! In order for Tahoe SAFE Alliance to end violence in the community, people need to know about us. You will distribute flyers, safety cards, and brochures in the North Lake Tahoe and Truckee community.
OFFICE: Help with clerical work in many different programs in Incline Village, Kings Beach, or Truckee. You will need some free time during the week during business hours: 9:00 AM – 5:00 PM. This is an excellent opportunity to learn about the inside workings of our non-profit organization and learn more about which volunteers programs are best suited to your needs.
TABLING: Engage the community at Tahoe SAFE Alliance fundraisers and at popular community events like Truckee Thursdays, Oktoberfest, Peace Day and more! You will educate attendees on intimate partner violence, sexual assault, and child abuse. Provide information on our services and recruit supporters and friends for the agency!
FUNDRAISING EVENTS: Plan and organize one of our popular annual events, or hold your own fundraiser for the agency! Choose from our signature event, Chocolate, Wine & Roses Festival, our annual theater production, Ski Day at Sugar Bowl, and Father Daughter Dance. We highly value skills in event management, marketing & public relations, food service, decorations, and solicitation of auction items. Serve on a planning committee!
GRANTS: Help the agency find new funding sources from grant makers. You will research leads for funding from public and private sources. This position provides volunteers with work experience valuable to any non-profit organization.
